Week One - New Media??

New Media is a loose term which describes a wide range of changes, mainly technological advancements, which have happened to many different types of media. I found the following quote the most useful to help understand what is actually meant by ‘new media’… “A unifying term which actually refers to a wide range of changes in media production, distribution and use.”
New media is referred to by some as ‘digital media’ as it is thought to be a more specific term.

  1. I agree with your blog and think that particular quote is an excellent way of describing it. Do you think new media should only be referred to as digital media? From reading Lister I think the term 'new media' can be translated into two different ways it's new compared to old analogue media or it's a completely new media all together and never been done before. What are you thoughts on this? Do you think its just development from the old analogue media or do you think it's a completely NEW approach altogether?

  2. I think that digital media is a good term, as 'new media' is a litle unsuitable due to the ongoing process of development and technological advancement.
I think that it is a mix of both, its a development in one way but also a new approach. An email, for instance is meant to have the same use as sending a letter but is also a new approach to a written form of communication.
Chat rooms however don't really have anything which they may have developed from, so this could be seen as a completely new approach to communication.
